PowerStar Replacement Battery for BladeZ Models XTR 450 Electric Scooter
Hey! I’m 14 and I live in California. Practically everything is illegal here, or has to be registered so they can take your money. Annywaayss, I would like to get a motor scooter or a laptop(see my other question). There are so many choices when it comes to motor scooters, and am having trouble deciding. My budget is under $1000, as my parents will pay for half and I can’t see myself raising over $500 by christmas.
Here are the ones that I’ve found so far.

I like that it is 50cc’s(in california, that means no license required, I believe..) and has 100MPG fuel efficiency. I just don’t know if it would be legal for a 14 year old to ride it around the town.

This one I know for a fact is street legal in California and you don’t need a license or registration or anything. It is technically a bike since it doesn’t go over 20 MPG or something and it has functional pedals(that are removable). It is cheaper than the others, too.

This one is street legal and 50ccs, but it says it goes up to 40MPH, and I don’t know if that’s legal for a 14 year old to ride.
Thanks for your help, guys! =]
1: in California you cannot drive anything on road until you are 15 1/2 (i know it sucks but it is the truth i have to live with it to as i live in California)
2: DO NOT BUY CHEAP BRANDS AS THE ONES YOU ARE LOOKING AT! believe me I have had experiences myself buy something name brand (yamaha honda etc.) used instead
3: no matter what if you want to go on road you have to have an A: drivers license (50cc & under) or a bike license (over 50cc) as i understand it
I want to buy my husband a gas powered scooter for an Anniversary gift. We only live 5 miles from where he works, so I thought this would be a great way to save on gas… However I have no clue who makes scooters other then the Honda 2008 Silver Wing ($8,600)…Does anyone have any suggestions??
Here are some suggestions:
Think of your motor size. If you don’t plan on touring the interstates on your scooter, 150 cc should probably be fine for your 5 mile commute. In fact, you may be able to get away with a 50 cc if the speed limit is no more than 35 mph. Yeah, the label may say that the top speed on a 50 cc is 45 mph, but would you really want to "floor it" for an extended period of time? What’s great about a 50 cc is you don’t have to register them in some states.
New or vintage:
New would be more reliable. Probably harder to fix yourself with the electronics. Most new scooters have automatic transmission. Now a days, a scooter either has vintage styling like an old Vespa or has modern styling and looks like a wasp.
Vintage is fun, but unless you have a Vespa, parts are pretty hard to find. Most vintage scooters have manual shifting.
Price:
If you were to buy that $8600 Honda, it would take a very long time to recoup that price in gas savings. I don’t know what kind of car you have, but for calculations sake, a scooter holds about 2 gallons of gas and can get 40-80 mpg depending on your engine size.
Some Scooter brands:
Vespa–Probably THE name in scooters. Manufactured by Piaggio. They have many models available from a 50cc to 250cc, and range from $3000-$8000 depending on what size engine and features you want. I have an old P series Vespa. The good thing about vintage Vespas is that you can fix them yourself with some knowledge of motors and a Haynes manual. If you go vintage, however, I would stay with a P series because they have turn signals, and the parts are readily available. Of course, stay away from "Viet Bodges," poorly restored Vietnamese Vespas that look really pretty on the internet.
I know more about Vespas, but I’ve heard some good things about other brands:
Genuine Scooters–An Indian company that produces models similar to other companies. Their Stella is an exact replica of a P series Vespa. Their parts are interchangeable. For a time, some Vespas were manufactured in India, so the design spawned many clones. Their rattler is similar to a Honda Ruckus.
Kymco–I’ve heard that these are very well made. They have a more modern look. Various size engines.
Schwinn also make scooters. I don’t know anything about them other than I’ve seen people win them as prizes on gameshows.
Tank–Chinese scooter. Really cheap in price. Probably the best way to really save in gas and recoup the cost in a short amount of time. If you go this route, be sure to buy from a store. And make sure the store has a shop in the back that will fix them when they break. The Tank scooter place in my area buys extra scooters just for the parts.
Basically, do your research, visit stores, evaluate your lifestyle. I hope this helps.
I don’t know which motor scooter to get. Which one is better quality? Worth the money? Anyone have any problems with either one?
I am very much ‘old school’ when it comes to motorcycles,
or motorscooters. I find problems with all of todays versions.
However, with the way companies come and go, and the
way dealers all tend to not be so forthcoming in parts and
service after you buy one, I would pick one on the basis of
the best quality of available parts, and service.
Look at how long the dealer has been around, how well
stocked they are for all parts, not just the particular
one you might buy, and ask others that have been
dealing with that business for a good while just how
well they take care of their customers. Also look into
how long the particular company that makes that
model have been in business. Do they make other
types of these machines, or are they only making
just different models of what you are viewing? Do
they have just the smaller engines, or do they have
larger machines in their manufacturing line? The
experience for a long time in making all types of
motorcycles gives them a better base business, and
a better possibility of long term service of their
customers. After all, you wouldn’t want to buy
what seems to look good, then not be able to
get parts or service a year later.
Take time in your shopping. Don’t just buy
an advertised ’style’ that appeals to you in looks.
I do have a drivers liscense and im think about getting the gas powered scooter to ride to my friends houses during the summer and to school instead of driving my car.
What laws are different and what should i know before doing this?
What do you mean by "scooter?" You mean one of those two-wheeled things that look like a Razor scooter with an engine on the back? If that’s the case, then
1. You need a driver’s license or permit. VC 21235(d)
2. You don’t need insurance, nor do you need registration or license plates. VC 21224(a)
3. You need lights and reflectors if you ride at night. VC 21223
4. You can’t ride on the sidewalk. VC 21235(g)
5. Most important, you must wear a helmet. VC 21235(c). After all, California is the nanny state.
These are the highlights. I suggest reading Vehicle Code sections 21220-21235.

There is only one kid i know of that crashed a scooter and he likes boys anyways so that can explain things.

Here is a picture of a part that i want to know what it is called on my scooter. This part the hose comes directly from the top of the gas tank.

And this part in the picture below i want to know what it is called. This part 1 hose comes from the hose from the last picture and the 2nd hose goes to a " T " hookup where one side goes to the carb and the other goes to the intake manifold. And the 3rd hose on the picture below goes to where the air filter is which connects to the intake side of the carberator.
http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv357/zuse1000us/S5032551.jpg
So again i am looking for what the name of the 2 parts are in the picture.
I believe the first pic is a rollover valve that is there to prevent fuel from spilling out of the tank should you lay the bike down. The second does appear to be an emission canister of some sort. As stated, leave them alone. If your state’s emission laws are such that motorcycles must also be tested or if, like the Peoples Republic of California, your state is looking into implementing some sort of smog law for motorcycles, then they will need to be left in place. Since it’s a 250cc scooter, there would be absolutely no advantage to removing them anyway.
Or still driving the SUVs?
Still the SUV’s, mostly. Although a lot of people cry and whine a lot, most poeple only pay $200 or $300 a month for gas. That’s not enough to justify changing a whole lot. If you buy a car that cuts that in half, that’ll give you $100 a month to spend on a car and break even. That won’t work.
There are certainly people on motorcycles more, but it’s mostly people that had them already, they just decide more often to ride them.
P.S. You can take a family on a scooter, no problem. The most I’ve seen overseas on a scooter has been 5. Mom and Dad and 3 kids.
I’m not talking online (But supply me with a link if you have one) Anyways what retail stores have motor scooters for sale (The ones like a razor scooter but with the motor ect not the Mopeds) Anyways ya so does any retail store sell motor scooters?
They are illegal in many states. So if you can’t find anything around you, they may be illegal in your area. Anyways…
Here’s the sight of a popular scooter manufacturer.

Also as was mentioned in an earlier post Pep Boys carry scooters. I’ve seen some mini-bikes at Tractor Supply as well. Worth a look if they are in your area.
