i am looking to buy a gas/motorized scooter, can anyone help me on my decision on which brand?

Get a Honda, they’re not too sexy but they’re indestructible, unlike the Vespas, which are sexy as hell but very finicky, and avoid all those cheap Chinese-made scooters they sell alongside the road and at gas stations, they’ll fall apart in about a year, and parts and service are impossible to find for them… go with a brand-name to get good service and reliability.

I have a 1986 Honda Elite 250 that runs like brand-new. With regular routine maintenance, they’re just bullet-proof!

Oh, and don’t bother with anything under at least 80ccs minimum, they’re WAY under-powered, and you might as well just get a bicycle. ;-)

scooter motor going on a mtb. scooter sprocket is attaching directly to mtb cog/sprocket via normal bicycle chain

Dunno. Problem is it depends on the motor. You need a bit of experimenting to get the rpm at cruising speed where you want it and so the power and torque curves matter. Try and find someone else using the same motor and find out what they have used and go from there.

You do know that you will have to provide a freewheel for the foot crank if you drive the chain? Otherwise the crank will rotate all the time (hard on the shins). If you drive the rear (or front) wheel, there is usually a freewheel already there so you don’t need to provide one. Driving the chain allows some use of the gears but needs more mechanically.

I have a 9 mile commute and am sick of buying into the whole gas slavery that my car has forced me into. I was thinking about getting a scooter, most likely electric. Any suggestions?

Hey,
I think you’d be better off buying a gas scooter, because electric ones are relatively new and besides, you’d have to wait for a while after your scooter’s run out of charge. I would recommend the Bajaj line of scooters. They’re Indian, and you can see them all over the place when you’re in India. They also get fantastic gas mileage. Also, if you’re still set on getting an electric scooter, look at places like AutoZone and PepBoys (where they sell electric scooters, but I really don’t know why!) for electric scooters under $1000
