I am going to get a 50cc gas scooter for commuting around while I’m at college, but I do not know whether to get a new or used bike. I’ve been to several dealerships and have gotten the consensus that it’s better to stick with a better quality brand (Taiwanese) than a crappy Chinese bike. I don’t want to spend more than $1200 and I’ve found the following:
$1000 for a new Chinese bike, no warranty, more likely to break sooner
$1200 used Taiwanese bike, little warranty left, more durable parts and better build quality
I am not the typical college-age guy who is rough on all his stuff. I take very good care of my belongings, particularly my autos and other expensive items. I doubt that I would break much on a Chinese bike regardless of what the dealer thinks. I’ll only need it for the last two years of school, so it doesn’t have to last forever either.
So I am seeking the educated advice of those who may be familiar with scooters/mopeds. Should I just go with the new Chinese bike (what I’m leaning toward) or stick with a better quality and more expensive Taiwanese bike?
Thanks
You’ll be money ahead to buy a used scooter assembled in Taiwan (honda,Yamaha, etc.) than to take your chances on a new Chinese Scooter unless you have a local Scooter sales/service, (like Enviromoto in Indianapolis, In) to maintain it for you. I know several people that own Chinese scooters that have given good service this way.

i would suggest finding a used yamaha Zuma, excellent little bikes, known to give good service, when you get use to the 50cc power range there is an abundance of upgrades for them, especially a pipe which brings them alive
you don’t gotta be rough on the cheaper chinese models, they are constant problems,my employer splits a building with a guy that sells them and they are constantly coming in for something,he has sold numerous different brands and all of them keep coming back, eventually you get bugs worked out and they are ok but it takes time and patience
use to be some killer videos on youtube of Zumas with some mods and how good they ran doing wheelies and such with ease, have looked over al lot of sites and talked to local shop shop guys and Zumas and the Eton Beamers both top out
now if you got the funds you can always go with honda ruckus but they are 4 stroke and cost a lot more to upgrade

cheap crap is cheap crap !
Haven’t seen any Taiwanese bikes where i live so i can’t comment on them but i’d be cautious, Chinese build quality is a joke, Japanese have been doing it long enough to turn it into an art form.
I know where id spend my money !

I have experience with both Japanese and Chinese bikes. You are much better off buying a used Japanese or Taiwanese bike because Chinese bikes are very poor quality and a used Japanese or Taiwanese bike will give you far less trouble. The only way I could advise you to buy a Chinese bike is if ALL of the following conditions apply:
1. You happen to get an extremely good price.
2. Are are very mechanically inclined and have a garage and tools.
3. You enjoy tinkering and problem solving.
4. You have alternate transportation available and you can afford to be late or absent from class.
