I live in Michigan around the Detroit area, and I've been toying around with ways I can survive without a car. It's getting to expensive to drive; my car payment plus insurance is almost $500 a month, and I only work part time and go to school so it seems like this is where most of my money goes.
I was thinking of perhaps selling my car and getting a 150cc gas scooter instead to commute to work and school. I live about 15 miles away from my job, and about 20 miles away from school. I can get to both without using the freeway on 45 mph roads though.
I did have access to an old, beat up car to use when it snows / rains that I could use as a backup.
Has anyone else ever tried giving up their car for a scooter? How expensive/difficult are they to maintain? Would 150cc be enough to travel around 40 - 50 miles round trip?
Thanks
To clarify, yes I did have access to an old, beat up car, but it is not very reliable so I'd prefer to use it as a backup and enjoy getting 80 mph and paying very low insurance rates.
bike tires last between 3 and 5 thousand miles price a set and do the math. my bike costs more per mile to ride than my truck that only gets 18 or so MPG. Add nevermind Michigan winters…..

No its not big enough you will be running the engine at high revs and
that will shorten its life, if you will be in heavy traffic you need more power and visibility. Economic reasons are not always the best reason for a motorcycle. All Japanese brands are well built and not expensive to maintain. Get yourself a mid-range motorcycle 250cc- 600
Your weather is a major negative for year round riding so you might be better off with a car.I am in Northern Virginia and I cant ride year round.

17 years without a car but that was in the southwest, and that was'nt always easy.
I did this.
Only I got a 250cc scooter so I can do some highway riding.
My scooter gets 65 mpg.
I am leaving to Florida before next winter so the weather won't be a factor for not being able to use it.

One thing you definitely need to research is the difference between driving a car and operating a motorcycle. There's a HUGE difference. You'll get treated differently on the road. Because you're smaller, people will think they can have their way with you. And if you're riding a scooter, be ready to receive a whole lot of misplaced aggression from drivers on the road.
You could be doing about 60 in a 45 and people will still ride up on your a$$ to make you go faster. It's as if people think you're on a moped and they're not paying attention to their own speedometer. They just want to get in front of you.
I think scooters are great in the city. But out in the suburbs where there's a bunch of pick up trucks, minivans, SUVs, Hummers and people that think bigger vehicles make them kings or queens of the roads… There's some problems.
*edit* Maybe they're all just jealous because I'm getting 70mpg and it cost about $2 to fill my gas tank. lol
